POST GRADUATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

  BRIEF HISTORY

Khalsa College Amritsar established in 1892 aimed at disseminating value oriented education in the fields of humanities, agriculture, science and technology and agriculture. In those days besides Lyallpur Agriculture College (Pakistan), Khalsa College Amritsar was the only institution to offer degree in Agriculture in the whole region. The B.Sc degree in the subject got affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1931 and thereafter to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in 1971. In 1966, the Punjab and the Central Government provided grant for the construction of separate Agricultural College building (old block), Bullock shed, Work shed and Dairy shed. The foundation stone of the Old Agricultural Block was laid in 1967 by Sardar Ujjal Singh, the, then   Governor of Madras and the President of the college council. In July 1967, the department was upgraded for post graduation (M.Sc) in Agronomy, Horticulture and Agricultural Economics.

            To keep pace with the increased demand for the course, the President, Khalsa College Charitable Society, Sardar Satyajit Singh Majithia, Honorary Secretary, Sardar R.M.S Chhina and Principal, Dr. Mehal Singh initiated expansion of the department. The new five storeyed ultra modern Agricultural Block, with laboratories of Fruit and Vegetable Sciences, Soil science, Agronomy, Crop Protection and Agricultural Economics equipped with latest technology was inaugurated by S. Satyajit Singh Majithia, President of the college council on 26 Nov, 2015. Moreover the new post graduate streams (M.Sc) in Soil Science, Vegetable Science and Plant Protection were added to the existing three in 2015. Diplomas in Seed Technology and Landscaping have also been added to cater to the demand of those who want to pursue the field on commercial lines.  The course curriculum and the syllabi of graduation and post graduation in agriculture is  in accordance with the directions of  Indian Council of Agricultural Research (I.C.A.R.) New Delhi and the degree awarded by G.N.D.U, Amritsar

            The department has played a significant role in legendary green revolution in Punjab during sixties through its specialized sevices viz: Farmer Training Centre; Bio Pest Control Lab; Soil Testing Lab; Nursery; Dairy Farm etc.
